Interns' Queries
  1. Will I be paid during my internship attachment period?
    You will receive an allowance as you are an intern. The allowance is an amount offered by companies to help to cover your expenses. They are not considered as salary.

  2. What are the working hours like?
    Based on the company and ITE agreement, your average weekly working hours is 44 hours.

  3. What if my supervisor or manager asks me to work extra hours?
    Since your weekly working hours is 44 hours, you will either be paid overtime pay for the extra hours or be given time off separately. Check with your supervisor for details.

  4. What if I am not compensated for working extra hours?
    Inform your Industrial Attachment (IA) lecturer or Class Advisor (CA). Provide him/her the details of your actual working hours by day and your correspondence with your supervisor.

  5. Is there CPF deduction for intern?
    No, based on the company and ITE agreement, interns are not subjected to CPF deduction.

  6. If I feel that I have been treated unfairly at my work place, what should I do?
    Inform your IA lecturer or CA the details of the incident immediately.

  7. If I notice that my allowance is calculated wrongly, what should I do?
    Inform your IA lecturer or CA. Provide him/her the details of your actual working hours by day and your correspondence with your supervisor.

  8. Is there insurance coverage for Interns during industry attachment work?
    Yes, all ITE students are covered by school insurance for injuries sustained at the company premise during work. Check with your IA lecturer or CA for details.

  9. Is Medical Certificate (MC) issued by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners accepted during my Internship?
    As a general guideline, MCs by TCM are not accepted during your internship.

  10. What do I do if I am unwell and cannot report for work?
    You must inform your supervisor immediately so that he or she is able to get a replacement for your absence. See a doctor and get an official MC and submit to your supervisor when you report to work the next day. You should also inform your IA lecturer or CA that you are on MC.

  11. I have CCA and will like to be excused on certain days every week to participate in my CCA. Is this allowed?
    Your IA company's operation and manpower needs will be priority when your supervisor or manager plan your duty roster. Therefore, you may request but not demand that you be excused from work due to CCA commitment. However, if you are representing ITE or Singapore to participate in any competition, do let your IA lecturer or CA know, for them to look into the matter.

  12. What is the attire for work during my internship?
    This varies from company to company. Some companies require interns to wear company uniform while some companies do not require. Check with your CA or IA lecturer for advice.

  13. During my internship, my CA is not the Liaison Officer (LO). However, I feel more comfortable confiding with my CA. Can I confide in my CA rather than the LO?
    It is recommended that you confide with your IA lecturer. However, if you do not feel comfortable confiding with the IA lecturer, but feel more comfortable confiding with the CA, you can do so too.

  14. Can I request for leave that is more than 1 week to go for overseas vacation? 
    No, during your internship period, there's a minimum number of training hours that you will need to complete. In the event that you request for leave, you may not be able to attain the minimum training hours for your internship. Check with your CA or IA lecturer for advice.

  15. I am late for work. Can I take a cab and claim from my company?
    No. It is your responsibility as an intern to manage your time properly. Use an alarm clock if needed.

  16. By the time I end work, there's no more public transport. Can I claim the taxi fare?
    This varies from company to company. Some companies provide while some companies do not. Check with your CA or IA lecturer for advice.

  17. How come my internship period is not the same as my classmates'?
    This depends on the arrangement made between the company and the school. Please check with your CA or IA lecturer for advice.

  18. Am I allowed to take pictures of my workplace for the purpose of my report writing?
    All information details relating to work place are confidential. Henceforth, please obtain approval from your supervisor before you take pictures.

  19. What should I do if I am late for work?
    You must inform your supervisor immediately so that he or she is able to get a replacement during absence. You should also inform your IA lecturer or CA that you are late for work.

  20. I feel very happy and comfortable working with the company. Can I join the company as a full time staff after my internship?
    Yes, please check with the company HR for more details on the conversion to full time staff after your internship.

  21. Can I request to be transferred to the same branch/department as my friends?
    No. Please note that internship attachment is to prepare students to learn to integrate into work environment. Companies have their manpower and operations needs to consider when assigning students to different branches/department.

  22. I am rostered by my manager to work in morning shift. However, another colleague asks me to help 'stand in' for him after my shift ends. What should I do? Will I be paid overtime or given time off?
    Do not assume that you will be given time off or overtime pay. You should seek advice from your supervisor or manager. Do inform your CA or LO accordingly so that they are aware and can seek clarifications if needed.
