How do you feel about winning the competition?
All:
We’re surprised and happy that our entry was chosen!

Any reasons why the team chose to do a board game, instead of a video, or a song?
Benjamin Law:
We were deciding between a video or a board game. In the end, we chose the board game format because all of us like playing board games like Monopoly, Battleship and Risk. Our board game enables players (children between 7 and 12 years old) to interact with one another. Through this game, they will learn more about the customs and traditions of our multi-racial society.

How long did it take to create the game? What was it like?
Dong Bing Bing:
We took about two months to complete it.
Samuel Foo:
The team met once a week for about two hours each time. We had to find information and pictures on the customs of the four races. We had to do a lot of typing, cutting and pasting work. When play testing, we had to make sure that when players throw the die, it would land on the box of a different race each time it is thrown. We also had to make sure that the game is fun, yet educational.

Did you seek anyone’s help or advice, for example from teachers, friends or family?
Benjamin Law:
Yes, as a matter of fact. Our teachers, friends and family members gave us very useful tips and advice. Without them, the game wouldn’t be what it is today!

Do you plan to further develop this board game, maybe to market it on a small scale?
All:
Well, not for now… But we’re always open to opportunities.

Did you learn anything new about yourself and your friends when working on this project?
Samuel Foo:
As the team leader, I now know how to play a leader’s role. But working in the spirit of co-operation was the most important.
Tan Rong You:
I was the go-between the teacher and my group members. I helped to get things moving as soon as I received new instructions from the teacher about tasks and deadlines after each phase of work was done. This made me realise the importance of being able to communicate clearly and logically.
Benjamin Law:
We’ve had the chance to work together before in a bigger group. This team is smaller and so each of us got immediate feedback on our work. Our strengths or weaknesses were made more obvious to us.
Dong Bing Bing:
Our classmates doing other projects had been kind to share ideas with us to improve the board game. We are lucky to have friends like that, and I appreciate them even more.

Finally, what are your thoughts on Racial Harmony Day?
All:
It’s a day for us to remember that even though we are of different races, we all share a common bond of friendship and community. We should all celebrate racial harmony and appreciate unity.

Our heartiest congratulations to the team for their wonderful effort!
Many thanks to Ms Fauziah Abdul Aziz, Lifeskills Lecturer, for the text and photos!
